 Resumes for the Position of Police Officer

The Cedar Grove Police Department will be accepting resumes from persons interested in interviewing for the position of police officer beginning Monday, February 25, 2013.  Applicants must be at least 18 years old and upon appointment must have successfully completed the Basic Course for Police Officers as administered by a NJ Police Training Commission Certified Police Academy and be eligible for PTC Certification.  In addition, applicants must have at least 60 college credits from an accredited institution; or 30 college credits and 2 years U.S. Military with an Honorable Discharge or at least 30 college credits and 2 years police experience with a New Jersey Police Department.  All applicants must be capable of acceptance into the NJ Police & Fireman’s Retirement System.  Resumes should be submitted to the attention of Township Manager Thomas Tucci at 525 Pompton Avenue, Cedar Grove, NJ 07009 by Friday, March 15, 2013.

Cedar Grove Police Collecting Care Packages for
United States Military Personnel Serving Overseas 

          The Cedar Grove Police Department has announced they will once again be collecting donations for care packages to send to our troops serving overseas this Holiday Season.  Thanks to the generosity of our residents, last year’s drive was a great success and we were able to send care packages to many of our soldiers away from their families during the Holidays.  Examples of items being sought include personal items such as toothbrushes, shampoo, disposable razors, shaving cream and body wash, snack items such as Pringles, crackers, cookies, hard candy, beef jerky and miscellaneous items such as comic books, playing cards, crossword puzzles, computer memory sticks, pens, notebooks and envelopes.  A copy of the complete list is available at the police desk.  Any person wishing to donate items can leave donations in the collection bin located in the Cedar Grove Municipal Building Lobby.  We will be collecting items until January 1, 2013.  Please help us say thank you to our troops by sending them a little piece of home.  Anyone having questions can call Lt. With the arrival of the winter months and early sunsets, we would like to remind our residents to be on alert for suspicious activity, since burglars often take advantage of the cover of darkness.  Please read our article on suspicious activity and report any unusual observations to the police department as it occurs.
What is Suspicious Activity?
            What is Suspicious Activity?  As followers of the Cedar Grove Police Blotter know, the Police Department always requests that the public report any suspicious activity observed as it occurs.  But what exactly is suspicious activity and when should you call the police to report it?  Past experience has showed us that some people fail to call the police simply because they are not sure of what seemingly innocent activity might be considered suspicious.  Some people hesitate to call for fear of being labeled a nosy neighbor, while others worry about being embarrassed if their suspicions prove to be unfounded.  Please know that your Police Department encourages you to report anything out of the ordinary without worry of embarrassment, it is our job to investigate your reports and we appreciate all calls.  Many criminals have been apprehended as a result of citizens making such reports.  In an effort to assist residents in identifying what suspicious activity is, we are providing a list of some things to look for:

•  Anything that looks out of place or is occurring at an unusual time of day could be criminal activity in progress.  Examples of things to watch out for are;
• A stranger entering your neighbor’s house when they are not home;
• Open or broken doors or windows at a neighbor’s house when they are not home;
• The sound of breaking glass, alarms or other loud noises;
• Anyone observed forcing entry into or tampering with a residence or parked vehicle;
• Strangers observed walking through a neighbor’s yard;
• Strangers observed loading a vehicle with televisions, computers or other valuables;
• Unknown parked or occupied vehicles idling at the curb without an apparent purpose;
• Strangers walking through the neighborhood looking into parked cars, backyards, etc.;
• Unknown vehicles moving slowly through the neighborhood or circling the same block repeatedly.

 
While some of these potentially suspicious situations may have innocent explanations, the Police Department would rather immediately investigate the circumstances than be called back when it’s too late.  Remember, your call could help us stop a crime and arrest a criminal.  The Police Department telephone number is 973-239-4100 and in case of emergency 9-1-1.
                                                                                               
 

 
            In response to several deer involved motor vehicle crashes in the past weeks, the Cedar Grove Police Department is offering motorists the following tips to help avoid being involved a deer related crash:
 
Be aware that the period between October and December is deer migration and mating seasons.  This results in a dramatic increase in deer activity and movement.
 
Be aware that deer are unpredictable, especially when faced with glaring headlights and fast moving vehicles.  Deer will often dart into the roadway.
 
Be aware that deer often move in groups.  If you see one, there are likely to be more in the vicinity.
 
Drive with extra caution when operating through wooded areas and areas known to have a large deer population, especially between dusk and dawn.
 
Decrease your speed when operating in an area known to have a large deer population.
 
When driving at night in an area known to have deer, use your high beam headlights when there are no other vehicles in the area.  The high beams will better illuminate the eyes of any deer on or near the roadway.
 
If you see a deer in your path, brake firmly but stay in your lane.  Many serious crashes have occurred when motorists swerve to avoid a deer and hit another car or lose control of the vehicle. 
 
Always wear your seatbelt
 
In the event your vehicle strikes a deer, avoid going near or touching the animal.  A wounded deer can hurt you or further injure itself.  If the deer is still in the roadway and poses a danger to other motorists, call 9-1-1 for police assistance.

          The Cedar Grove Police Department has announced that it will be participating in the impaired driving enforcement campaign “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2012 Statewide Crackdown”. This impaired driving enforcement crackdown will take place between the dates of August 17 through September 3, 2012.  During the campaign period, Cedar Grove Officers will be out in full force to detect, arrest and prosecute any motorist found to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of drugs or alcoholic beverages. 
 
A concentrated national effort, the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” program helps to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving through high visibility enforcement and public education tools, including posters and banners.  Launched nationally in 1999, the program works to combat drunk driving during some of the busiest travel times of the year, including the Labor Day holiday period.   
 
In 2010, alcohol-impaired fatalities accounted for twenty (20) percent of New Jersey’s motor vehicle fatalities.   As part of the initiative, the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety will be providing Cedar Grove with a $4,400 Grant to run additional DWI patrols during peak hours of the two week period.
 
The Cedar Grove Police Department is offering the following advice during the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2012 Statewide Crackdown”: 

• If you plan to drink, designate a driver, someone who will not drink, before going out.

 

• Realize that every drink you have makes it more difficult to know when you’ve had too much to drive.

 

• If you plan to drink, take mass transit, a taxi, or ask a sober friend to drive you home.

 

• If you’ve have too much to drink, spend the night where the activity

is being held.

• Always buckle up – it’s your best defense against an impaired driver.
