Cedar Grove Police Department
Press Release

Date:  August 31, 2017
On Thursday, August 31st 2017, police arrested an adult male on charges that he was in possession of a stolen motor vehicle. The incident began at 2:42 p.m. when Officer Christopher Heck observed the involved vehicle, a 2014 Yamaha motorcycle, traveling East on Reservoir Drive with no visible license plate. The officer activated his emergency lights and siren to initiate a motor vehicle stop. The operator refused to stop and proceeded around another vehicle and accelerated rapidly East onto Normal Ave toward Montclair State University.  When the Yamaha approached the intersection of Upper Mountain Avenue, the operator lost control and dropped the motorcycle in the roadway. The operator attempted to flee on foot, however, Officer Heck was able to apprehend the subject and place him into custody with the assistance of off-duty Port Authority Police Officer Det. David Narvaez. It was determined the Yamaha had been reported stolen by the Stafford County Virginia Sheriff’s Department in 2015. The driver, identified as 36 year old Latwan Munford of Montclair, was charged with possession of the stolen motorcycle, obstruction, eluding, hindering apprehension and multiple motor vehicle offenses. He was transported from the scene to the hospital for minor injuries. Once medically cleared, he was processed on all charges and transported to the Essex County Jail to await a bail hearing. All persons charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
