Foodtown Theft/Credit Card Fraud Investigation

Date:  September 11, 2015
The Cedar Grove Police Department has identified and issued charges against two suspects wanted in connection with the August 20th. theft of a woman’s pocketbook as she was shopping at the Foodtown Supermarket on Pompton Avenue.  A detective bureau investigation into the incident resulted in the identification of 40 year-old Kashanda D. Hawkins of Newark and a 17 year-old East Orange juvenile as the persons wanted in connection with the theft and the subsequent use of the victim’s credit cards at multiple locations at the Willowbrook Mall.  Detectives were able to identify the pair after receiving information on their identity from persons viewing surveillance video of the theft in progress that was circulated through the media.  The video showed the juvenile suspect taking the victim’s pocketbook from her shopping cart when the victim turned her back.  The juvenile suspect could then be seen immediately leaving the store in the company of Hawkins who was carrying a toddler.  Investigation revealed the pair went directly to the mall following the theft and used the victim’s credit cards at three different locations at the mall before they could be cancelled.  Warrants for the arrest of Hawkins have been issued charging her with conspiracy to commit theft, credit card theft and identity theft and juvenile complaints charging the juvenile defendant with theft, credit card theft and identify theft have also been filed.  The current whereabouts of the defendants is not known at this time.  Detective Michael Tower was the investigating officer.
