Police Arrest Clifton Man on Charges of Driving While Intoxicated and Assault By Auto Following Motor Vehicle Crash with NJ Transit Bus

Date:  March 4, 2015
On Tuesday, March 3, 2015, police arrested 23 year-old Alejandro Ramos of Clifton on charges of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), Reckless Driving and Assault By Auto.  The defendant’s arrest followed a 10:16 p.m. investigation into a motor vehicle crash involving a vehicle being operated by Ramos and a NJ Transit bus.  Investigation revealed Ramos was traveling southbound on Pompton Avenue near Cedar Street when his vehicle, a 2000 Honda Civic, crossed over into the northbound lane of traffic and struck the bus head on.  As officers interviewed Ramos they observed numerous empty beer cans strewn about his vehicle and detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, along with signs of impairment.  Ramos was subsequently placed under arrest for DWI and transported to Mountainside Hospital for treatment of a neck and arm injury.  The 46 year-old bus driver was also transported to Mountainside for treatment of a leg injury.  Due to the involved injuries Ramos was charged with Assault By Auto due to him being under the influence.  Neither injury was considered to be life threatening.  Following processing Ramos was released at the hospital pending a March 11, 2015 Superior Court Arraignment in Newark.  Ptl. John Smigelsky was the arresting officer.
